Where we belong.

Arcizac - 2019.

I often wonder if there is a place on this earth meant for us, somewhere where we belong. Lately, I came to the conclusion that it’s all down to where we feel happy, wherever that can be and for as long as it has to be.

Painting landscapes is a kind of a way for me to pause and perpetuate a feeling of fulfilment from a place I have been to, spent time in or even simply saw from the car seat. A space that gave me joy and that I want to hold on to for a while or even forever.

My first landscape was ‘Arcizac’ inspired by the hills of my mother childhood village in the Pyrenees. There is a valley there where everything feels quiet and dormant. I kept ‘Arcizac' and it now hangs in our bedroom. Every time I look at it it gives me so much warmth and I travel again in that special place.

(Now thinking of it, most of the paintings in our bedroom are landscapes…interesting.)

Painting a scenery takes me a while as if to immerse myself into the place for as long as I can. I consider every parts of the canvas, every colours. When a piece leaves the atelier for its new home I trust that it will bring that same plenitude, somehow peaceful, joyfull too.

On the hills of Lourdes, Pyrenees, France.

A few years ago I wrote these few lines accompanied by a video that you can see here (with sound on)

‘One landscape at a time.

Considering every moment.

From cutting the canvas,

To sketching,

To choosing the colours,

Adding the layers.

Considering every square,

Every inch.

Considering every piece.’

With love,

Johanna.
