New painting series - Promenade
La lune et les cyprès - ‘Promenade’ series, 2024
As we are slowly closing the year I am delighted to present the last series for 2024 - ‘Promenade’.
Inspired by our year’s travels and walks on the hills of Italy and Transylvania, ‘Promenade’ is an invitation into the deep forests of blues and greens. A peaceful contemplation of the moon framed by majestic trees. My fondness for full pumpkin and fig leaves, the delicate branches of damsons, were also sources of inspiration.
Reflecting back on the series I notice how creating a layered, textured paint has become an integral part of my approach. Someone wrote to me one day comparing my paintings with ‘carded wool’. I absolutely loved that analogy. It expressed exactly what I wish to create when I paint and translated so well my affection for textile and wool in particular. In the paintings of ‘la lune et les cyprès’ and ‘la lune en foret’ the blues and greens feel like velvet. To reach such a grain I use a small brush and it demands quite a lot of brush strokes. I recall when I first started painting I used cutout cardboard strips, as brushes seemed so hard to manipulate. I have come a long way.
There is something extremely exhilarating about painting on a large format, I adore it! But, surprisingly, I thrived painting the three small scale canvases of ‘la grange’. The simplicity of a barn finding its place in the depth of the woods or on a steep side of a meadow came so spontaneously and it felt so gratifying.
I hope you enjoy these new pieces as much as I loved painting them.
